A Superficial Society

BY FATIMA SAID

A two-year-old child is fighting stage four cancer and his parents are worried he is not going to make it.

Just imagining a child with cancer breaks many hearts, and makes much of the population uncomfortable, because illness and death isn’t something anyone wants to think about.

Death is not glamorous. Many children and people are going through a terminal illness. That is not the most desirable to think about, but does that mean we shouldn’t care?

Should we as a culture just push it off and pretend it doesn’t happen because it isn’t something that is warm and fuzzy to think about?

Now you’re probably wondering why I am asking this question?

Well it’s simple; because people choose to ignore these things. People do not want to think about cancer or any illness that may take your life because it isn’t pretty.

I recently participated in a group effort to raise money for the Cleveland Clinic so ill children could participate in opening day for the Cleveland Indians and posted a picture of the event and what was going on.

The picture I posted of what the Cleveland Clinic was doing only got a couple likes, but when I posted a selfie it got over a 100 likes and a couple comments.

When popular Instagram bloggers create posts about donating to a cause, it only gets a couple likes. However, not everyone can donate to the cause because of funding but liking or sharing a photo does not cost a thing.

This is a sign of our society becoming superficial and it’s terrifying.

We live in a time where social media and reality tv shows dominate public interesting and our society only seems to care about their appearance or look, but what happened to caring about the things that matter.

Why do people no longer care about what goes on in this world? What happened to people’s heart?

There are people out there that need our help and cannot do without it.

I’m not saying you have to donate to help a cause or charity, I know money is tight for many. It does not cost a thing to raise awareness.

As a society, we need to start caring about what is going on in this world because we are all part of this beautiful earth. Times are tough as political and international tensions run high.

No one in our society is happy with what’s going on in the world, but if you are not happy then stop complaining and do something. Help sick children, get into politics, or petition our government.

What happened to peaceful protest, or talking to our government leader when we no longer like what they were doing. I get many people think that this will not do anything, but how will we know until we try?

If you want change in this world then be the change you want to see because sitting around and complaining is not going to help anyone.

As Albert Einstein once said “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Without changing the way we think, we cannot change how the world is and if we want the world to change we need change our thinking from pessimistic to optimistic.

Death isn’t glamorous, and neither is a superficial society.
