Fandom for dummies: “Timeless” edition
Fandom – the state of or condition of being a fan of someone or something
Type: television show
Release Date: October 3, 2016
Fan Name: “TimeFandits,” “Clockblockers,” or “Clockblocking TimeFandit.”
Actor Malcolm Barrett had asked fans via Twitter one day to decide what the fandom
name should be. Clearly, the proper name is still a little hazy. The fandom is still relatively small
due to the show being so new, but there are high hopes for growth when season two premieres.
Reasons why we love the show:
● Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan: Both men created the show! In the past, they have given
the world plenty of shows to geek out over (“Supernatural,” “Revolution,” “The Shield,”
etc.) and did not disappoint when they created “Timeless.”
This show is so revolutionary and so lovable for multiple reasons. It is a time-traveling show
unlike any other because it gets its history right. The three main characters are:
o Lucy Preston: (Abigail Spencer) A history professor who knows her information
better than anyone else. A powerhouse filled with purpose and a need to prove
she’s more than what she seems.
o Master Sergeant Wyatt Logan: (Matt Lanter) A U.S. Army Delta Force operative
who still grieves for his deceased wife. He was hired to only make sure that his
companions were safe and the bad guys were killed.
o Rufus Carlin: (Malcolm Barrett) A highly sufficient programmer who helped
build the time machines and is one of the few people who knows how to pilot
The show hits sensitive topics such as how nearly every timeline is a problem for
a black man (Rufus) to go into and shows how a woman has never truly been an equal to
a man, regardless of skin color. The Time Team races back in time to help preserve the
American timeline as Garcia Flynn (Goran Višnjić), former NSA agent gone rogue, does
everything in his power to unravel the nation from the start.
This is a show filled to the brim with love and acceptance of all; the show is not
whitewashed and there is LBGQT+ pride for all to see. The show also highlights people
history has forgotten such as the real Lone Ranger, U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, entertainer
Josephine Baker, and many others. A family friendly action show packed with drama,
action, and comedy, it is an underdog on the rise.
The fan base is small, but mighty to say the least. “Timeless” was originally cancelled at
the end of the first season. Fans were devastated despite numerous attempts to boost ratings and
make enough noise for NBC to hear. Instead of moping, fans took to the Internet demanding to
be heard with #RenewTimeless trending worldwide. Three days later, the network relented and
renewed the show for another season to be aired in 2018.
