Rideshare is going places with the help of Uber

NCC is introducing a new ride-share program in partnership with Uber for Business that offers free transportation for students and staff between Bethlehem Campus and the Fowler Center on the Southside of Bethlehem.

The rides are offered on the NCC profile on the standard Uber app. Once the user plans a qualified trip, the ride will be free of charge courtesy of the college. Eligible rides are offered between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The Uber for Business service is replacing the scheduled shuttle service that was provided last spring.

“The service is more convenient for students and staff because they can go whenever they want instead of scheduled shuttle runs,” says Mark Culp, Director of Facilities. “The reason the shuttle was discontinued was because of low ridership and because Uber provides more convenient times for our riders.”

“Safety is always a concern and we recommend the individuals follow the safety tips that Uber publishes,” says Culp.

A few of the safety tips Uber recommends on their website is to wait inside until the app shows your driver has arrived, check to make sure the car model, license plate, and driver match the information on the app, and have the driver confirm your name before entering the vehicle.

To ensure safety for users, all drivers are background checked before they are eligible to drive with Uber through an annual multi-step screening process. Above all, trust your instincts when riding with Uber, or any other ride-share service.

If there is an urgent situation, the user can call 911 directly through the emergency button on the app. The app will provide you and the emergency dispatcher with real-time location and trip details.

This new partnership is already proving to be more successful than previous transportation services offered, with ridership up almost 300% from last Spring, according to Culp.
