Spartans take part in 5K run
On Nov. 15 Northampton will hold its first ever 5K run at the main campus to raise money for the Northampton Community College Foundation, a group dedicated to helping students afford college expenses.
Sanabria-Melendez, counselor for College Success, is in charge of the planning committee for the run and explains how the goal is to keep students with financial needs in school.
“The whole point of it is to help students with those needs stay in school and complete what they started,” Melendez explained.
The run will begin at Kopecek Hall at 9AM, where it will lead onto Green Pond Road, head through Moravian Academy, lead back through the Spartan Center, through NCC’s parking lot and finish back at Kopecek Hall.
In preparation for the 5K, Paul Pierpoint, Vice President of Community Education at the Monroe campus, leads training sessions every Saturday at 9am at Kopecek Hall for anyone interested in participating.
“We’re training people whether it’s their first 5K or their next 5K,” Pierpoint said.
Registration will take place both online and the day of the run on Nov. 15. Students are able to receive a discount if they register online.
For those registering online, the code for walkers is “STUDENTS”. For those running, you are advised to purchase the “run” option and use the code “SPRINT10”
“The cost for students is $10 to run or walk the 5K,” she said. “The registration for runners that are not on campus is $20, for walkers it’s $15.”
The first 100 people to register for the 5K will receive a t-shirt at the event. The top male and female will each get a prize, as well as the runner ups.
Student Senate will also be present at the race awarding club points to contestants.
“Student Senate is awarding one point for every $100 dollars raised by the clubs,” she said. “The top 3 clubs at the end of the fundraiser will also receive one point.”
The 5K event will feature a 50-50 raffle along with door prizes.
