Welcome to the Theatre

By: Serena Campanelli and Alexis Cole

Auditions for the theatrical productions of the fall season – Merrily We Roll Along and The Pillowman – were held in Kopecek Hall on August 22-23.

With original music by Stephen Sondheim, Merrily We Roll Along is a nonlinear musical about a composer and his two close friends; the show begins with their unfulfilled adulthood and ends with, ironically, their optimistic youth.

Written by Martin McDonagh, The Pillowman is about a man who is imprisoned for writing stories that mirror the crimes taking place in his neighborhood.

Jonah Padula, a freshman Theatre major from Nazareth Area High School, talked about the auditioning process for both shows and how it compared to the many high school productions he had secured major roles in.

“Auditioning is a lot more relaxed at Northampton Community College then in high school because I feel like in high school it was much more ‘at each other’s throats,’” said Padula.

Nazareth Area High School’s Theatre troupe has not received a Freddy Award or any other type of major theatrical recognition since their 2013 production of Anything Goes! and this atmosphere of dramatic rivalry might play a big part in their downfall.

Compared to Northampton Community College, which has put on amazing productions for years from the first days of classes into the summer months, Nazareth Area High School’s Theatre troupe seems to be lacking in some of the most important factors of effective teamwork.

“Everyone wants to be here – they don’t really care what role they got,” said Padula, “they just wanted to be a part of the show and I feel like it’s a much more positive environment.”

Overall, with Northampton Community College’s history of high quality productions and the complexity of these two shows, the fall season is rumoured to be promising.

If you like either production and want to get involved in the later shows, auditioning can vary for every show and for every director.

According to Padula, both fall auditions comprise of cold reads for both productions, and 32-bars of a song specifically for Merrily We Roll Along.

The theatre department did callbacks the night after their auditions ended, and they are currently in the rehearsal process.

Merrily We Roll Along will be held in the Lipkin Theatre on October 18, 19, and 20 at 7:30pm, and October 21 at 3:00pm;

The Pillowman will be held in the Norman Roberts Lab Theatre on November 15, 16, 17 at 7:30pm, and November 18 at 3:00pm.
