A Chorus for us

Northampton Community College’s in-residence chorus will be performing a show titled
“A Family Christmas Spectacular” Sunday, Dec. 10 in the Lipkin Theatre.
The Lehigh Valley Youth Chorus will be performing an arrangement of holiday music
from the likes of George Frederick Handel, Alejandro Jimenez, and Kirby Shaw. The show will
be performed in concert with the Lehigh Valley Italian American Band.
The chorus features children between 3rd and 9th grades. “In a choral setting, young
people are not only growing musically, but they are learning valuable life skills as well,”
LVYC’s Artistic Director Kelly Atwood said.
Atwood, The program’s founder and artistic director, says that children can be expected to learn the merits of hard work, responsibility and self-motivation.
The chorus has performed for a capacity crowd of 8,000 in Allentown’s PPL Center, as
well as giving back to the community by performing in retirement homes, hospitals and places of
worship.
Audiences can expect a night featuring multicultural music, both secular and religious.
“We always encourage our concert-goers to sing along with us in some capacity during the
concert.
The program will also include performances by the LVYC Friends and Family Chorus
comprised of parents and volunteers who wish to share their talents.
“It’s a wonderful way for our singers and their family members to share their love of
singing and music,” Atwood said. “In fact, the adults have just as much fun as the children do.”
During her four season tenure as creative director, Atwood says that watching the children
grow is the most fulfilling part of her job.
“Witnessing the transformation of each singer who participates in the LVYC program has
been an amazing and rewarding experience for me. I feel so privileged to have created a program
that is impacting young lives in such a positive way.”
Doors open at 2:30 p.m. with an instrumental prelude beginning at 2:45. Admission is
free, but canned good donations are encouraged to support the local food bank and will be
collected at the door.
