NCC’s women’s tennis team cancels fall season

Northampton Community College’s women’s tennis team has canceled their fall season, according to an announcement by Director of Athletics Troy Tucker on the NCC Spartan Athletic website.

The team is following many others in their division who have canceled their seasons, Tucker explained. NCC’s team plans to continue practicing throughout the fall with the hope of beginning their season in the spring.

Men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, sports traditionally played in the fall, have also been postponed until spring.

The announcement came on the same day that NCC announced a one-week delay for the start of the fall semester. Most programs will now begin Aug. 31. To meet academic requirements, seven programs will still begin Aug. 24.

“NCC has always prided itself on being a caring community and we hear loud and clear the challenges our students are going through right now because of the COVID crisis,” said Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Sedgwick Harris in an email to students.

In 2019, NCC’s women’s tennis team won the Region XIX championship and came in 2nd place in the NJCAA National Championship. The same year, the team was awarded NJCAA All-Academic Honors for achieving a 3.54 GPA. Head Coach Megan Sell was named Region XIX Coach of the Year.
